February's The Crazy Dog Mom of the Month: Christina and Aurora

Your name: Christina Walsh (soon to be Reaume)

Dog's name: Aurora

Instagram: @onceuponaurora.gsd

Where do you live: Bradenton, Florida

Tell us about your dog: Aurora is a German Shepherd puppy. She was born on June 13, 2019 in Minnesota and we drove 24 hours to bring her down to Florida. Aurora is a super cuddler and absolutely loves belly rubs, walkies, and any toy that squeaks!

Tell us a little about you: Myself and Aurora’s Dad (Jason) are getting married March 07, 2020. Jason is a police officer. I recently graduated law school and am studying to take the Florida bar exam in February to become an attorney. My Instagram is @walshisthename

What are your dog’s favorite things (toys, treats, etc): Aurora’s favorite toys are: Squeaky Chipmunk, Extra Squeaky Bouncy Ball from Chuck It, and Lazer Pointer for Zoomies. Aurora loves playing with her BFF’s Abigail (my brother’s German Shepherd) and Freya (my friend’s Aussie Shepherd). She also loves walkies, playing in the water, Zoomies, fetch, and scaring mommy by jumping over 4ft fences.

Why do you think of yourself as a dog mom: I think of myself as a dog mom because I see Aurora as my child. I know most people look at their dog as a dog...but the moment I held Aurora in my hands, I immediately fell in unconditional love. I treat her better then I treat myself and I only want the absolute best for Aurora. (Also, I spoil her like no other lol)

What was the moment you knew you weren’t just a dog owner but a dog mom: My mom has sliding glass doors at her house, one night while Aurora and Abigail were running in and out of the house to the back patio, my mom and I closed the sliding glass doors while the pups were inside. Aurora (not seeing that the door has closed) ran into the sliding glass door and yelped (she was fine), I ran to Aurora dropped to my knees and started whaling out crying because I was so incredibly scared that she would be hurt (she totally wasn’t hurt). I stayed up that entire night to make sure she didn’t have a concussion and I just rubbed her all night (yes I was excessive and again, she was fine). I realized that I was a dog mom, not just a dog owner, I love my little girl an unexplainable amount and couldn’t imagine life without her now.

What is your favorite part of being a dog mom: Aurora quickly became my best friend (especially while Jason is at work - he works nights). I read to her, I tell her about all my daily events (she might not understand what I say but I think she listens), and if I cry or am in a bad mood, she gives me even more love and kisses then usual to cheer me up.

What is your best dog mom advice: My best mom advice would be to watch “German Shepherd Man” videos on YouTube, he helped answer A LOT of questions that I had about training, feeding, behavior patterns, and so much more with Aurora. Without his videos and weekly newsletters (totally free), I would have no idea where to begin with raising Aurora.

What is your best dog mom hack: KONGS! Aurora absolutely loves to chew. I have at least 4 Kongs that I put wet dog food or just mush together her Victor dog food with some chicken broth or sometimes give her organic pumpkin puree (I freeze them overnight) and she will chew/lick that for an entire hour (if I let her, I usually give it while I’m trying to study or don’t want her in the kitchen while I’m cooking).

What is your favorite thing to do with your dog: My favorite thing to do with Aurora is to go for long walks. We have a few preserves and parks near us (like Robinson’s Preserve or Desoto National Memorial Park) that we love! Aurora is able to “heel” next to me very well now, so we have just began running and walking together on the trails. While walking, she always looks up at me every minute or so for reassurance that she’s doing a great job.

What is one dog mom goal you have: My main dog mom goal is just to keep Aurora happy, healthy, and playful. My other dog mom goal for 2020 is to train Aurora more with obstacles, search/rescue type training, and utilize her digging in a more positive way.

Fun fact about your dog: Fun Fact! Aurora likes to jump with all 4 paws off the ground at the same time (we nickname her Tigger from Winnie the Pooh sometimes). She greets her family with running up, sitting in front of you, jumps up with all 4’s (not actually jumping on you) and give you a kiss on the cheek.
